Gi vs No-Gi BJJ: Which Should a Beginner Start With?
27 August 2026

One of the first questions new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students ask is whether they should train Gi or No-Gi. Both versions teach grappling, positional control and submissions, but the clothing and available grips change how the game feels.
At Limitless Martial Arts, students can access BJJ in Southampton and No-Gi grappling classes. You do not need to make a permanent choice before starting.
What is Gi BJJ?
Gi BJJ is practised in a reinforced jacket and trousers secured with a belt. Students may grip parts of the uniform to control posture, slow movement or create attacks.
The additional grips can make exchanges more methodical. Beginners learn how to use the material safely while also recognising when an opponent is controlling their sleeve, collar or trouser leg.
What is No-Gi BJJ?
No-Gi is normally practised in a rashguard or fitted sports top with shorts or spats. Clothing grips are not used, so control relies more heavily on body positioning, underhooks, head position and grips around the limbs.
No-Gi often feels faster because there is less friction and fewer ways to hold the uniform. It also overlaps strongly with the grappling used in MMA.
Which is easier for a beginner?
Neither format is universally easier. Gi grips can slow the action and give beginners time to understand positions, but they also add a new layer of techniques. No-Gi has fewer clothing grips to learn, but the pace and slipperiness can initially feel challenging.
The quality of the beginner instruction matters more than choosing the “perfect” uniform. A structured class should explain positions, safety and training etiquette before expecting new students to roll freely.
How the techniques differ
The same broad position may exist in both formats, but the controls change. In Gi training, a student might use a collar or sleeve to manage distance. In No-Gi, equivalent control may use an underhook, wrist grip or head position.
Submissions overlap, although the rules and clothing influence which attacks appear most often. Beginners should learn positional safety before chasing complicated techniques.
Which is better for self-defence?
Both can develop useful grappling skills. Gi training teaches how clothing can be used for control, while No-Gi develops control that does not depend on a jacket. Neither should be treated as a guarantee in an uncontrolled situation.
Which is better for MMA?
No-Gi is more directly transferable because MMA competitors do not wear a Gi. However, many accomplished grapplers build excellent positional awareness through Gi training as well. Students interested in MMA can benefit from a broad foundation before specialising.
Which format is better for competition?
Both have active competition scenes with different rules. A student intending to compete should train consistently in the chosen format. Competition remains optional for recreational students.
Does body type decide the answer?
No. Physical attributes influence how an individual game develops, but neither format is reserved for a particular build.
What should I wear to my first class?
Check which session you have selected. For Gi, ask whether a suitable uniform can be borrowed. For No-Gi, wear fitted sports clothing without zips, pockets or hard fastenings. Keep nails trimmed, remove jewellery and bring water.
Can I train both?
Yes. Training both formats can expose you to a wider range of grips, movement and problem-solving. Some students prefer one style, while others enjoy alternating throughout the week.
Common beginner mistakes
- Using strength continuously instead of learning the position
- Holding the breath during difficult exchanges
- Waiting too long to tap to a controlled submission
- Comparing progress with experienced students
- Buying equipment before checking the class requirements
Frequently asked questions
Can I attend No-Gi in ordinary gym clothes?
Suitable fitted sportswear may work for a first visit if it has no zips, metal fastenings or loose pockets. Confirm with the club first.
Do belt grades apply in No-Gi?
Many academies use the same underlying BJJ progression, although belts are not worn in No-Gi. Grading practices vary.
